History of the Ice Hockey World Championship, Canada’s first dominant team in the tournament, won the tournament repeatedly between 1930 and 1952. The United States, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Great Britain and Switzerland also competed at this time. The Soviet Union first participated in 1954 and soon became a competitor in Canada. Until the nation’s break in the year 1 99 63, the Soviet Union’s dominant team had won 20 championships. During that time, only three countries won the medal: Canada, Czechoslovakia and Sweden. Russia first participated in 1992 and the Czech Republic and Slovakia started the competition in 1993. In the 2000s, the contest was opened more like the “Big Six” team – Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States.
